Watchmen gets closer to big screen

Movie studio Paramount Pictures is to bring the seminal 1980s comic series 'Watchmen' to the big screen, with 'Requiem for a Dream' director Darren Aronofsky behind the lens.

The Hollywood Reporter says that 'Watchmen' is often referred to as the 'War and Peace' of comics and is credited with redefining the superhero genre.

Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, it tells of a group called the Crimebusters and the attempts to destroy them.

The film script will be written by David Hayter, whose previous credits include the 'X-Men' movies and 'The Scorpion King'.
