Legendary actor Marlon Brando has died at the age of 80.

According to reports, Brando died yesterday at a hospital in Los Angeles. The cause of death is not yet known but he had been ill for some time.

Born in Nebraska in 1924, he made his Broadway debut in 'I Remember Mama' when he was just 20 years old.

The star of 'A Streetcar Named Desire', ' Apocalypse Now' and 'Last Tango in Paris', Brando was considered to be one of the greatest actors of his generation, revolutionising American acting with his method performances.

He won Best Actor Oscars for his performances as the ex-fighter in 1954's 'On The Waterfront' and as Mafia boss Don Vito Corleone in 'The Godfather' in 1972.

Brando refused the second Oscar in protest of the federal government's treatment of American Indians.

In his last film, the Frank Oz-directed 'The Score', he starred alongside Robert De Niro and Edward Norton.

Brando's surviving children include sons Christian, Miko and Simon and daughters Rebecca, Petra and Ninna. He is also survived by two sisters, Jocelyn Brando and Frances Brando.
