Irish nightclubs which claimed that record companies were not entitled to royalties on music played in their discos have settled their High Court dispute with the Phonographic Performance Ireland Limited (PPI).
Record companies claim that they own the music on the records played in the clubs, but the payment of royalties is disputed.
The action was brought by the PPI, which is owned by the various record companies and represents all their interests in this country.
The action centred on the companies having to prove copyright ownership in relation to a sample list of 50 songs.
Leading names in the nightclub entertainment business were named in the action, including John Reynolds, Peter Quinn and Philip Mahon.
The record companies included Sony, EMI, Virgin, Warner and Polygram.
If the case had proceeded, prominent figures in the rock industry including Paul McGuinness, Bryan Ferry and Status Quo were expected in the High Court.
