The Darkness are set to headline Sunday night at OXEGEN after David Bowie had to withdraw from the music festival due to illness.

Bowie has been forced cancel his entire European Tour due to a trapped nerve in his shoulder sustained last week.

According to his official website, the singer was advised by his doctors to cancel the performances "due to the continuing pain and extreme discomfort from a trapped/pinched nerve in his shoulder and to prevent possible further injury".

The statement continued: "Due to the unpredictable nature of the condition and in an effort to give fans as much warning as possible, (and indeed, to aid promoters in finding a replacement headliner in time for the festival dates) David very reluctantly agreed to take the advice."

"David, and everybody involved with the tour, is very sorry for the hardship that this difficult decision may have caused."

As well as headlining OXEGEN on Sunday 11 July, Bowie was due to perform at T In The Park and festivals in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Portugal.

Justin Green of concert promoters MCD said: "We wish David Bowie well and hope he has a quick recovery."

In other OXEGEN news, Razorlight, who are set to top the UK charts at the weekend, have been confirmed to appear on Saturday night.

Following confirmation that the OXEGEN campsite will open a day early, on Friday 9 July from 12 noon, Dublin Bus have announced a special shuttle service to and from the site.
