Former Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett is set to run as a Labour Party candidate in Australian elections later this year.
Garrett has formally become a member of the party and on Thursday announced his intention to run as an opposition Labour candidate.
"I look forward to doing the good work with that party in the run-up to this election, good work as a local member, good work hopefully as a member of Parliament and good work on the issues that are important to me," said environmental activist Garrett.
Labour's leader, Mark Latham, said Garrett was a possible minister if the party came to power, but the singer downplayed the idea.
