Charlize Theron is to star in an adaptation of Mark Richard's acclaimed short story collection 'The Ice at the Bottom of the World'.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the film will be directed by 'Boys Don't Cry' helmer Kimberly Peirce.

Set in the gothic American South, 'The Ice at the Bottom of the World' saw author Richard win the 1990 Ernest Hemingway Award for first fiction.

It is hoped that shooting on the adaptation will begin in autumn 2005, after Theron has completed work on the sci-fi action movie 'Aeon Flux' and 'Class Action', the new film from 'Whale Rider' director Niki Caro.
