'The Motorcycle Diaries', a film based on the bike trip a young Che Guevara made through Latin America in the 1950s, will open the 58th Edinburgh International Film Festival on 18 August.

Directed by Walter Salles, 'The Motorcycle Diaries' received rave reviews after its screening at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

It stars up-and-coming Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal as the Cuban revolutionary.

Bernal, who has starred in 'Y Tu Mama Tambien' 'The Crime of Father Amaro' and 'Amores Perros', is also in Pedro Almodovar's new film 'Bad Education'.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival will take place from 18 to 29 August.

'Bad Education' will open in Ireland on Friday 25 June.
