The Oscar winning actor and author Peter Ustinov has died in Switzerland. He was 82.

Born in London in 1921, Ustinov began acting at 17, sold his first screenplay at 24 and directed his first film at 25.

He won two Best Supporting Actor Oscars for his performances in 'Topkapi' and 'Spartacus' and his other celebrated films included 'Lorenzo's Oil' and 'We're No Angels'.

He played Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in the films 'Evil Under the Sun' and 'Death on the Nile' and numerous times on television.

A UNICEF goodwill ambassador from 1971 onwards, Ustinov was knighted in 1990.
