Shannon convicted of drink driving

Irish traditional musician Sharon Shannon was yesterday convicted of drink driving at Galway District Court.

Shannon was fined €800 and disqualified from driving for two years, after the judge accused her of lying to the court.

She had denied driving her car which crashed into a parked car at Taylor's Hill in Galway on 26 September 2001.

A breath sample taken from Shannon at Galway Garda Station following her arrest showed a reading of 99 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, almost three times over the legal limit.

Garda Padraig Nee gave evidence at Galway District Court that Shannon had admitted driving the car at the scene of the accident.

However, Leo Healy, who was also at the scene of the crash, told the court he had been driving and singer-songwriter Frankie Lane also testified that Healy had been driving.

Inspector Tony O'Donnell said both Healy and Lane were telling lies and had tried to mislead the court.

Convicting Shannon, Judge Mary Fahy also accused her of telling the court blatant lies.
