Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's latest film 'La Mala Educaciòn (Bad Education)' will open the 57th Cannes Film Festival in May.
According to the festival organisers, this will be the first time that a Spanish film has opened the event.
'La Mala Educaciòn' is the story of two young boys who discover love, film and fear during the 1960s in a religious school and stars Gael Garcìa Bernal, Fele Martinez and Javier Cámara.
In a statement, Almodóvar said: "The joy that fills me upon learning that my latest film is to open the next Festival de Cannes is more that of an adolescent than an adult...Opening the Festival de Cannes is the highlight of the honeymoon I have been living with the French public for years."
He was a member of the Cannes Jury in 1992 and took the Best Director award for 'All About My Mother' in 1999.
The Cannes Film Festival will take place from Wednesday 12 May to Sunday 23 May. Quentin Tarantino is President of this year's jury.
