British author Monica Ali has been nominated in the fiction category of the American National Book Critics Circle Awards for her acclaimed novel 'Brick Lane'.
The other nominees were 'The Known World' by Edward P Jones, Caryl Phillips' 'A Distant Shore', 'The Time of Our Singing' by Richard Powers and Tobias Wolff's 'Old School'.
Chicago oral historian, 91-year-old Studs Terkel, will receive a lifetime achievement award for what he describes as his championing of the "uncelebrated" and Susan Sontag was nominated for criticism for 'Regarding the Pain of Others'.
The winners will be announced on 4 March in New York.
'Brick Lane' has previously been short-listed for the 2003 Man Booker Prize and nominated for the Guardian First Book Award.
