Cold Mountain dominates BAFTA list

'Cold Mountain' and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' lead the nominations for this year's BAFTA awards.

The American Civil War drama is nominated in 13 categories with 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' making the shortlist in 12.

Both films are nominated in the Best Film category along with 'Big Fish', 'Lost in Translation' and 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World'.

'Cold Mountain', 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', 'In This World', 'Love Actually' and 'Touching the Void' make the Best British Film shortlist.

The nominees for Best Director are: Tim Burton ('Big Fish'), Sofia Coppola ('Lost in Translation'), Peter Jackson ('The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'), Anthony Minghella ('Cold Mountain') and Peter Weir ('Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World').

Sean Penn is nominated twice for the Best Actor award for his work on 'Mystic River' and '21 Grams'.

Penn's '21 Grams' co-star, Benicio Del Toro, is also nominated for Best Actor as are Johnny Depp ('Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl'), Jude Law ('Cold Mountain') and Bill Murray ('Lost in Translation').

Scarlett Johansson is nominated twice in the Best Actress category for 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' and 'Lost in Translation'.

The other Best Actress nominees are: Anne Reid ('The Mother'), Uma Thurman ('Kill Bill: Volume 1') and Naomi Watts ('21 Grams').

The nominees for Best Supporting Actor are: Paul Bettany ('Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World'), Albert Finney ('Big Fish'), Ian McKellen ('The Lord of the Rings: 'The Return of the King'), Bill Nighy ('Love Actually') and Tim Robbins ('Mystic River').

Holly Hunter ('Thirteen'), Laura Linney ('Mystic River'), Judy Parfitt ('Girl with a Pearl Earring'), Emma Thompson ('Love Actually') and Renee Zellweger ('Cold Mountain') are the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

The awards ceremony will be held in London on 15 February.
