Abbey and Gate unhappy with grants

The artistic directors of The Abbey and Gate theatres in Dublin have said they are very disappointed by the small increases in the grants awarded to them by the Arts Council.

The Abbey's artistic director, Ben Barnes, said the increase of around €300,000 in the National Theatre's grant failed to take any account of The Abbey's plans to celebrate its centenary next year.

The Arts Council yesterday announced an increase in funding to arts organisations of more than 19% to just over €40m next year.

375 organisations and 32 local authorities applied for funding.

The Chair of the Arts Council, Olive Braiden, said some organisations would be disappointed.

The Arts Council said a full list of grants to individual organisations would not be published until all organisations had been informed.
