Michael Jackson has surrendered himself to police to be charged with multiple counts of molesting a child.
The 45-year-old pop star was taken into custody by sheriffs moments after flying in a private jet to the airport near the California town of Santa Barbara.
Jackson was booked on multiple counts of 'lewd and lascivious behavior' with a child under the age of 14, a process that includes having his fingerprints and mugshot taken.
Each charge carries a jail sentence of up to eight years. An arraignment hearing was scheduled for 9 January.
Jackson was released on bail of $3m, of which $300,000 had to be paid immediately.
A statement issued on behalf of Mr Jackson denounced the allegations as outrageous and scurrilous.
Ten years ago, Jackson made an out-of-court settlement in a civil action alleging child abuse, and no criminal charges were brought.
