Arts Council funding to rise by 19%

The Government has announced plans to increase funding to the Arts Council by 19% in today's Book of Estimates.

In a statement, the Council said it appreciated that, in awarding the increase, the Government was acknowledging the value of the artist to the whole community and their central role in society.

The Council also welcomed the strong support of Arts Minister John O'Donoghue in achieving the increase, but added that demand would inevitably outstrip its capacity to fund.

The Book of Estimates also showed that funding for the Irish Film Board will increase by 9% in 2004, but a decision on whether the Government intends to retain the Section 481 tax incentive for the film industry will not be announced until Budget day.

Almost €3m is also being made available for a programme of events to mark the 100th anniversary of Bloomsday on 16 June next year.
