Brookside set to end after 21 years

The last episode of the Channel Four soap 'Brookside' is due to be screened tonight.

The show, which began 21 years ago, attracted audiences of up to 8m at its peak.

However, viewing figures slumped to just 500,000 and earlier this year it was relegated to a graveyard slot.

Over the last 21 years, the everyday goings-on in Brookside Close have included rape, a lesbian kiss, a body under the patio, two armed sieges, an incestuous brother and sister, a religious cult and a variety of murders.

Plot details for tonight's episode have been kept under wraps but 'Brookside' creator Phil Redmond has brought back Lindsey Corkhill (Claire Sweeney) and bad boy Barry Grant (Paul Usher) for the grand finale.
