The opera singer, Luciano Pavarotti, has been admitted to a New York hospital with what are described as serious health problems.
The 68-year-old Italian tenor became ill after a recital in Mexico, where he had to start his first piece twice due to a coughing fit.
It is understood he has postponed a concert planned for Wednesday in Panama, which was to benefit local charities.
The world-famous singer has been on tour to promote his first pop album, 'Ti Adoro'.
