Bono presses Bush for AIDS funding

U2 frontman Bono met with US President George W Bush yesterday to ask for more funding to be set aside for AIDS initiatives.

Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, Bono said: "We had a good old row. What I just can't agree with him on is the numbers."

Bono wants the US to increase its commitment to fighting AIDS from a planned $2bn to $3bn for the fiscal year beginning in October, but the White House has concerns that the system is not yet in place to use the money effectively.

"I'm not here peddling a cause", said Bono. "7000 people dying a day is not a cause. It's an emergency."
