Poet Heaney praises Eminem's lyrics

Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney has praised the lyrics of controversial US rapper Eminem.

Heaney, speaking in Norwich, compared Eminem's influence on popular culture to that of Bob Dylan and John Lennon in their heyday.

The former Professor of Poetry at Oxford University said that Eminem "has created a sense of what is possible. He has sent a voltage around a generation."

"He has done this not just through his subversive attitude but also his verbal energy."

In the past, Eminem's lyrics have been criticised as homophobic and misogynistic.
