The latest Harry Potter book has broken all previous sales records since its launch.
'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', the fifth instalment of the adventures of the schoolboy wizard, comes nearly three years after its predecessor, 'The Goblet of Fire'.
In the UK, Sainsbury's sold twice as many as anticipated while Tesco sold 317,400 copies in the first 24 hours - an average of 220 a minute.
Online retailer Amazon said the JK Rowling novel had also broken Internet sales records, with more than 1.3m advance orders received world wide, including more than 420,000 from the UK.
'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' has already sold an estimated 5m copies in the USA.
