Singer Vandross 'critical' after stroke

Soul singer Luther Vandross, who suffered a stroke last week, is in a "critical but stable" condition according to a hospital statement.

The hospital said it would release "no further details" on Vandross, who has battled weight and health problems for years and suffered the stroke just days before his 52nd birthday.

Since launching his solo career in 1981 after working as a back-up vocalist for singers including David Bowie and Bette Midler, Vandross has sold more than 20 million records worldwide and was the recipient of four Grammy awards in the 1990s.
