English is an Irish box office hit

Rowan Atkinson's new big screen comedy 'Johnny English' has topped the UK & Ireland box office chart with takings of €5m over the weekend.

The spy spoof took €18.6m at cinemas worldwide between 11 and 13 April and went to number one in 20 of the 22 countries in which it opened.

Atkinson, known to TV audiences for his Mr Bean and Blackadder characters, starred in 1997's cinema release 'Bean' and as the voice of Zazu in the highest grossing animated film of all time, 'The Lion King'.

'Johnny English' has not yet opened in North America, where its release date is set for 18 July.

The film co-stars John Malkovich, Natalie Imbruglia and Ben Miller.
