Tom Hanks is reported to be planning a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1952 masterpiece 'Ikiru'.
The original Japanese film tells the story of a low-level bureaucrat who learns he has terminal stomach cancer and tries to change his life in order to have some impact on the world.
Dreamworks are in final negotiations about the film, with Richard Price ('The Colour of Money', 'Ransom') lined up write the screenplay.
Hanks is currently working on another remake - of 1955 British film 'The Ladykillers', directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.
It is due to start filming this June, with a 2004 release planned.
