'Fanfan La Tulipe', starring Penelope Cruz and Vincent Perez, will open this year's Cannes Film Festival on 14 May.
The French film is a remake of a swashbuckling comedy and follows the exploits of an 18th Century adventurer.
Cruz plays a girl who cons the hero Fanfan into joining the French army.
The new version is directed by Gerard Krawczyk and produced by 'Leon' helmer Luc Besson.
It is the fourth time the story has made it to the screen: earlier versions were made in 1907, 1926 and 1952.
