Refugee drama takes Golden Bear in Berlin

The 53rd Berlin International Film Festival has awarded the Golden Bear for best film to Michael Winterbottom's docu-drama 'In This World'.

The British director was up against strong opposition from Hollywood films 'The Hours', 'Adaptation' and 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind' but his recreation of a refugee's expedition from Afghanistan to London also won the festival's Peace and Ecumenical Jury prizes.

Spike Jonze did not go home empty handed as he took the Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear for 'Adaptation'.

Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore were awarded a collective Best Actress award for their roles in 'The Hours' and Best Actor went to Sam Rockwell for his portrayal of a US game-show host in 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind'.

The Best Director award went to Patrice Chereau for 'Son Frere' and Best Artistic Work to Chinese director Li Yang for his film 'Blind Shaft'.
