Madonna to release anti-war video

Madonna is set to launch her own attack on US plans to invade Iraq with a music video depicting "the catastrophic repercussions and horror of war".

The video is being produced for the title track and first single of her upcoming album 'American Life', which is due for release in April.

The Material Girl is reported to throw a grenade at a fashion show in the video, in which she wears military fatigues. Shots of Madonna are interspersed with images of soldiers and the victims of war, including bloodied babies.

The graphic video was shot last week in LA and post-production work is currently underway.

Madonna's spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg denied that the 44-year-old singer was singling out US President George W Bush for criticism.

Rosenberg told the New York Post the video "expresses a panoramic view of our culture and the looming war through the view of a female superhero, portrayed by Madonna."

Last month more than 100 entertainers including Martin Sheen, Kim Basinger and Samuel L Jackson sent a letter to George Bush urging him not to start a war.
