Chicago is nominated for 13 Oscars

The nominations for the 75th Academy Awards have been announced, with 'Chicago' making the shortlist in 13 categories.

'Gangs of New York', 'The Hours', 'The Pianist' and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' have also received numerous nominations.

All five films have been nominated in the Best Picture category.

As expected, Daniel Day-Lewis has received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in 'Gangs of New York' with Nicole Kidman nominated in the Best Actress category for 'The Hours'.

The other nominees for Best Actor are: Jack Nicholson ('About Schmidt'), Michael Caine ('The Quiet American'), Nicolas Cage ('Adaptation') and Adrien Brody ('The Pianist').

The Best Actress shortlist includes Renée Zellweger ('Chicago'), Julianne Moore ('Far From Heaven'), Salma Hayek ('Frida') and Diane Lane ('Unfaithful').

The nominations for Best Supporting Actor are: Paul Newman ('Road to Perdition'), Christopher Walken ('Catch Me If You Can'), Ed Harris ('The Hours'), John C Reilly ('Chicago') and Chris Cooper ('Adaptation').

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah (both 'Chicago'), Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep (both 'The Hours') and Kathy Bates ('About Schmidt') have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Shortlisted for Best Director are: Rob Marshall ('Chicago'), Martin Scorsese ('Gangs of New York'), Roman Polanski ('The Pianist'), Stephen Daldry ('The Hours') and Pedro Almodóvar ('Talk to Her').

'Chicago', 'About a Boy', 'The Hours', 'The Pianist' and 'Adaptation' have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

The films nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay are: 'Gangs of New York', 'Far From Heaven', 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', 'Talk to Her' and 'Y Tu Mama También'.

'Ice Age', 'Lilo and Stitch', 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron', 'Treasure Planet' and 'Spirited Away' have been nominated in the Best Animated Feature category.

The awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on March 23.
