O'Toole receives an honorary Oscar

Irish actor Peter O'Toole is to receive an honorary Oscar at this year's Academy Awards on 23 March.

The recipients of honorary Oscars are chosen by the Academy's board of governors for "exceptional distinction in the making of motion pictures or for outstanding service to the Academy".

O'Toole has been nominated seven times for the Best Actor award and Academy President Frank Pierson said the board felt, "it was time for him to hold his own Oscar in his hands".

Previous recipients of honorary Oscars include Bob Hope, Gene Kelly and Sidney Poitier.
