Magdalene Sisters nominated for Bafta

'The Magdalene Sisters' has been nominated for a Best British film Bafta.

The film has already won several awards for its controversial depiction of life in an Irish Magdalene laundry run by Catholic nuns.

'The Magdalene Sisters' is in competition with 'Bend it Like Beckham', 'Dirty Pretty Things', 'The Hours' and 'The Warrior' for the award.

Daniel Day Lewis has been nominated for a Best Actor Bafta for his role as Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting in Martin Scorsese's 'Gangs of New York'.

The Irish actor is up against Adrien Brody ('The Pianist'), Nicolas Cage ('Adaptation'), Michael Caine ('The Quiet American') and Jack Nicholson in 'About Schmidt'.

'Gangs of New York' and 'Chicago' head the Baftas shortlists with twelve nominations each.

'The Hours' is just behind with eleven nominations, including best film along with 'Gangs of New York', 'Chicago', 'The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers' and 'The Pianist'.

The awards ceremony will take place on 23 February.
