RTÉ scoops ten IFTA awards

RTÉ scooped a total of ten awards at the Irish Film and Television Academy awards in Belfast on Friday, including Best Television Drama for 'Paths to Freedom'.

Michael McElhatton won Best Actor in a Television Drama for his role as Rats in the series made by Grand Pictures for RTÉ.

Susan Lynch won Best Actress in a Television Drama for her role in 'Any Time Now'.

Best News and Current Affairs programme went to 'Bad Blood' in the 'True Lives' series (Andec Media for RTÉ).

'Forgotten Children', a documentary on children in a Romanian orphanage and the Sports programme 'Breaking Ball' (Setanta Television for RTÉ) won Feature Programme Awards, while Best Animation went to 'Give Up Your Aul Sins' (Brown Bag Films).

Best Single Documentary went to 'Us Boys' (Igloo Films for RTÉ) and Best Documentary series went to 'The Ghost of Roger Casement' (Crossing The Line films for RTÉ).

'The Green Fields of Vietnam' (True Lives) won Best Editing for Ray Roantree.

Gay Byrne was presented with a unique Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony.

Cathal Goan, Managing Director, RTÉ Television, said: "For RTÉ to win so many IFTA awards is welcome recognition of the efforts put in by everybody involved, both within the organisation and by the independent producers. And we intend to expand and improve our output, particularly in drama and factual programmes, making the kind of quality productions the Irish people seek and deserve to get."
