The actor Nick Nolte has been given three years probation and ordered to stay on a drug counselling course after he admitting driving while under the influence of drugs.
He was arrested in September after being pulled over by police in Malibu.
Officers said the 61-year-old actor was "completely out of it", dazed and drooling behind the wheel of his car.
Drug tests later identified the substance in Nolte's system as the banned "date rape" drug GHB.
His lawyer said he had unwittingly consumed the drug in a bodybuilding supplement.
