Renowned director Karel Reisz dies

Karel Reisz, the director of such films as 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' and 'The French Lieutenant's Woman', has died in London.

The Czech-born director was 76.

Reisz was orphaned at the age of 11 when his parents died in a concentration camp.

He emigrated to England and spent the last two years of World War II in the RAF.

Reisz worked on documentaries and advertising films before making his directorial debut with 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' in 1960.

Among Reisz's other films were the Patsy Cline biopic 'Sweet Dreams' and an adaptation of Beckett's 'Act Without Words' as part of 2000's 'Beckett on Film' season.

Over the last decade he had focused on theatre and directed plays in Dublin, London and Paris.
