Gemini awards for RTÉ drama series

'Random Passage', the RTÉ/CBC 8-part TV drama series has won two Gemini Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars.

Clare-born Aoife McMahon won Best Actress for her leading role as Mary Bundle, while Best Cinematographer went to Pierre Letarte at a gala ceremony at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Toronto on Monday night.

The series, which was screened on RTÉ One in May and June of last year, is set in the early 1800's, in Ireland, England and Newfoundland. Colm Meany also stars.

McMahon landed the role during her final year at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts).

Canadian cinematographer Pierre Letarte has worked with 'Random Passage' director John Smith before, on 'The Boys of St Vincent' (1993) and on the Michelle Pfeiffer film 'Dangerous Minds' (1995).

The series was shot in Summer 2000 and is based on the novels 'Random Passage' and 'Waiting for Time' by award-winning Canadian novelist, Bernice Morgan.

It was produced by Subotica Entertainment Ltd and Full Works (Ireland) and Cité-Amerique Cinéma Télévision and Passage Films (Canada) for RTÉ and CBC, supported by the Irish Film Board.
