REM are working on their 13th studio album in Vancouver, Canada according to a post on the group's official website.
The American rock band expect to release the as yet untitled album on Warner Bros in "a year or so".
Previous comments by Peter Buck and Michael Stipe have indicated that the group will embark on a full-scale world tour in 2003.
Buck's early descriptions of the new album have hinted that it will be darker and more raw than their 2001 release 'Reveal'.
