Irish singer Peter Smith quit ITV1's 'Popstars: The Rivals' this weekend after admitting he was two months too old to take part in the talent show.

The 25-year-old Dubliner confessed to presenter Davina McCall that he had lied about his age. Contestants had to be no older than 24 at the beginning of July to compete.

'Popstars: The Rivals' will create one girlband and one boyband to go head-to-head for the Christmas number one single.

Smith is the second contestant to leave because of his age; fellow Dubliner Hazel Kaneswaren left after discovering she was 10 days too old. She gave birth to a baby boy at the start of this month.
