Actor Nolte charged with drug driving

Actor Nick Nolte has been charged with driving under the influence of a so-called date-rape drug.

The charges follow Nolte's arrest in California last month when he was stopped for driving erratically on a motorway.

Los Angeles authorities filed two misdemeanour charges of driving under the influence of gamma hydroxybutyrate, or GHB. GHB is known for its euphoric qualities but has also been used on "date rapes" because it can cause unconsciousness.

The actor is due to be tried in Malibu Superior Court at the end of the month but does not have to be present in court.

The 61-year-old could face six months in prison if convicted of the charge.
