Welsh plans football hooligan film

'Trainspotting' writer Irvine Welsh is planning a film about UK football hooligans based on the book 'Soul Crew'.

The book, by former hooligans Tony Rivers and David Jones, offers an insider account of violence by hardcore Cardiff City FC fans.

The authors are reported to have agreed a five-figure sum from the deal with 'Trainspotting' actor Robert Carlyle's production company 4Way Pictures.

City fans have criticised the planned adaptation, saying it will glamorise violence and hurt the club's reputation.

A spokesperson said there is no organised violence at Cardiff and the film will misrepresent fans.

The title 'Soul Crew' was first adopted by travelling Cardiff City supporters in the 1980s, and is now used to refer to a minority violent element in the club.

The book was published in March and has sold 20,000 copies to date.
