Gwyneth Paltrow's father has died

The father of actress Gwyneth Paltrow, producer and director Bruce Paltrow, has died in hospital in Rome.

Paltrow, who had throat cancer, was 58 years old. He is understood to have died of complications from pneumonia and a recurrence of the cancer.

Bruce Paltrow's career began in the theatre in the late 1960s, but he was best known for the Emmy-nominated TV series 'St Elsewhere' and the film 'Duets', in which Gwyneth starred.

After winning an Oscar for 'Shakespeare in Love' in 1999, Gwyneth described her father as "the smartest person I've ever known in my life."

He had arrived in Italy to celebrate his daughter's 30th birthday on 27 September.

His wife, actress Blythe Danner, was in LA working on a new television drama and was not with her husband when he died.

Paltrow is also survived by his son, film director Jake Paltrow.
