Barrymore denies involvement in death

Michael Barrymore has strenuously denied involvement in the death of a partygoer found floating in a swimming pool at his luxury home in March 2001.

The 50-year-old TV presenter also defended himself against drug-taking and perjury accusations.

His denial came as a radio documentary, to be broadcast tomorrow, claimed the police inquiry into Stuart Lubbock's death may have been hampered by a failure to spot crucial evidence at an early stage.

BBC Radio Four's 'File on Four' programme suggests that detectives may not have looked at asphyxia as the cause of the death until much later in the inquiry.

Police initially worked on the theory that the 31-year-old had drowned at Barrymore's luxury home in Essex, on March 31 last year.
