Oscar-nominated actor Nick Nolte checked into a substance abuse treatment centre earlier this month following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The 61-year-old signed himself into the Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut on 14 September.
A spokesman said the actor would remain at the clinic for as long as he felt was necessary.
The actor was stopped by police in Malibu, California on 11 September for driving erratically.
He failed a sobriety test and was then arrested.
Nolte, who has spoken in the past of his heavy drinking, is free on $2,500 bail with a hearing scheduled for 26 October.
