Mercury nomination for Gemma Hayes

Gemma Hayes has been nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize.

The Tipperary singer songwriter faces competition from David Bowie, Doves, The Streets, The Coral, Joanna MacGregor, Ms Dynamite and Beverly Knight.

Hayes told reporters it felt "damn good" to be nominated for her debut album 'Night On My Side'.

Chairman of the judging panel Simon Frith described the shortlist as "the most joyful Mercury shortlist for years".

Last year, PJ Harvey became the first female solo artist to take the prestigious prize with her album 'Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea'.

The nominations for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize are:

'Run Come Save Me' - Roots Manuva
'Original Pirate Material' - The Streets.
