Fred Durst told an Australian court that he warned concert organisers about security in advance of a concert where a teenage girl died.
On a video link between Los Angeles and Sydney, the Limp Bizkit singer said that he told Big Day Out organisers the band would not play unless security was tightened up.
The following day Jessica Michalik was killed in a crush at the front of the stage in Sydney.
The band have been accused of inflaming the situation during the gig.
Durst also said that he had been greatly affected by the incident: "I'm very emotional right now talking about it, it's taken me a long time to talk about this."
