Hopkins in talks with Irish director

Sir Anthony Hopkins is in talks with Irish director Damien O’Donnell to play a nineteenth century pope in his new film.

The British actor, who won an Oscar in 1992 for the flesh-eating Dr Hannibal Lecter in 'Silence of the Lambs', is in discussions to take on the role of Pope Pius IX.

The film, titled 'Edgardo Mortara', is to be directed by Damien O’Donnell who was responsible for the sleeper hit 'East is East'.

'Edgardo Mortara' is based on the true story of a Jewish child who was kidnapped by agents of the Papal inquisition in the mid-19th century because he had been baptised by a servant.
