Jennifer Lopez is to play the doomed heartbreaker Carmen in a new movie.
Prosper Merimee's short story provided the inspiration for Bizet's cherished opera and told the story of the romance between the gypsy woman and a young Spanish soldier.
Variety reports that the new film will update the Carmen storyline.
For the movie Lopez, who will also produce, is teaming up with Craig Pearce, co-writer of the acclaimed 'Moulin Rouge'.
Lopez's latest picture, the thriller 'Enough', opens in the US on 24 May.
