Bono appears at REM guitarist's trial

Bono appeared in court as a character reference for REM guitarist Peter Buck yesterday.

Buck is undergoing trial for an alleged drunken rampage aboard a British Airways flight from Seattle to Heathrow last year.

The U2 lead singer described Buck's behaviour as "a bizarre event" and added that in the 17 years he had known the guitarist he had never seen him drunk and "absolutely never seen him taking drugs". Bono said Buck is " famously known for being a peaceable person".

Bono told the judge he had known Buck since 1985 when REM and U2 played the Milton Keynes Bowl together.

Buck denies being drunk on board an aircraft, assaulting cabin staff and damaging property. The trial continues.
