DreamWorks’ new film ‘The Time Machine’, which provides Irish singer Samantha Mumba with her first film role, has topped the US box office in its first weekend.
Despite some less-than-favourable critical reviews, ‘The Time Machine’ took $22.5m over the weekend, beating off competition from Mel Gibson’s ‘We Were Soldiers’ ($14.5m) and Ice Cube’s crime comedy ‘All About The Benjamins’ ($10.1m).
Based on HG Wells’ 1895 book, ‘The Time Machine’ tells the story of a scientist whose experiments bring him into the distant future. The film also stars Guy Pearce, Jeremy Irons, and Mumba’s younger brother, Omero.
Wells’ book was previously adapted for the screen in 1960, when Rod Taylor, Alan Young and Yvette Mimieux took the lead roles.
