Douglas donates $2.5m to theatre

Acting legend Kirk Douglas has donated $2.5m to help turn an old cinema into a theatre.

The building, in California's Culver City, will become a 500-seat theatre and home to the Centre Theatre Group.

The theatre will be renamed the Kirk Douglas Theatre when it opens in 2004.

Announcing the donation, the 85-year-old actor said that the aim of the theatre was to "give young talent a chance to develop".

The total cost of renovations is expected to reach $8m.
