Whitbread winner to be announced

The winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year for 2001 will be announced later this evening.

The winners of the various Whitbread categories – novel, first novel, biography, poetry, children’s – make up the competition for the overall £30,000 prize.

Among those in contention are ‘Twelve Bar Blues’ by Patrick Neate, ‘Something Like A House’ by Sid Smith, ‘Selkirk’s Island’ by Diana Souhami and ‘Bunny’ by Selima Hill. The winner of the Children’s Book of the Year will be announced shortly before the overall winner.

The Whitbread Prizes have been in existence since 1971.
