‘Memento’ has been given a Best Film award by the Las Vegas Film Critics’ Society.
Although released in the UK and Ireland in the year 2000, Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller did not hit US screens until 2001, making it eligible for upcoming awards ceremonies, including this year’s Oscars.
‘The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring’ won six awards, including Best Director for Peter Jackson.
Between them, the two films won 10 awards: Australian actor Guy Pearce took Best Actor for ‘Memento’, which also won the Best Screenplay and Film Editing awards; ‘The Lord of the Rings’ won Best Cinematography, Costume Design and Visual Effects as well as Best Song for Enya's ‘May it Be’ and an award for Best Score.
Tilda Swinton won Best Actress for ‘The Deep End’, Steve Buscemi won Best Supporting Actor for ‘Ghost World’ and Naomi Watts received Best Supporting Actress for ‘Mulholland Drive’.
‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone’ (as it is called in the US) won Best Family Film – the first in a trilogy of adaptations of UK author JK Rowling’s books missed out completely on the recent Golden Globe nominations.
