‘The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring’ was the most popular film in cinemas around the world this weekend.
The film took $45.25m in the United States and Canada between Friday and Sunday, making it number one on the box office chart.
The first in the Tolkien trilogy did not match figures earned by ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone’ on its opening weekend, however.
The adaptation of JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book earned $93.5m on its opening US weekend in November.
